"The Jets' players seemingly have come to grips with the likelihood that Rex Ryan won't be their coach at this time next week.
With one game remaining in a 3-12 season, next Sunday at Miami, the Jets are widely expected to hold a press conference the following day, and announce that Ryan has been let go. It will come as no surprise.
There can be some positives in a coaching change, according to Jets quarterback Geno Smith, though he said a transition to a new coach is challenging. He was speaking generally about the subject, since he has experienced it.
During Smith's college days at West Virginia (2009-12), he went through a coaching change. After his second season, the Mountaineers hired Dana Holgorsen to replace Bill Stewart.
Similarly, Smith almost certainly will wind up with a new head coach and offensive coordinator/system for his third NFL season.
"It is all about what you make it," Smith said of a coaching change, when asked about his experience at West Virginia. "I think the toughest part about it is not being able to continue to play for the same coach, the same guy that you learned to love, you invest so much in, and you believe (in) them. To reset and readjust is a tough thing to do, but we are professionals and we have to do it. A change could be good for us all. So if it happens, when it happens, then we will see."
At West Virginia, Smith thrived in Holgorsen's pass-happy offense during his final two years, boosting his draft stock. But things might not be so rosy for Smith this time around, especially if Jets owner Woody Johnson decides to fire general manager John Idzik, who drafted Smith in the second round in 2013.
The new general manager might have less tolerance for Smith's mistakes. Ryan criticized Smith for making two late-game errors in Sunday's loss to the Patriots, including an interception that was Smith's 34th (and 40th total turnover) of his career (29 games and 28 starts).
Regardless of whether Idzik stays or not, the Jets figure to bring in another quarterback this offseason -- through the draft, free agency or a trade -- to perhaps unseat Smith. No word on whether Smith thinks a potential quarterback change could also "be good for us all." His lack of progress this season is a big reason why the Jets are 3-12, and it underscores Ryan's continued weak point: an inability to develop a young quarterback."
